The Young Interpreter Scheme recognises the huge potential that exists within our school community for pupils of all ages. It uses their skills and knowledge to support new learners of the English language so that they feel safe, settled and valued from the start of their school experience.
The Young Interpreters undergo specific training to prepare for this role. The support they can offer to a newly-arrived pupil can be very reassuring from a parent or carer’s point of view at a time when their child may be adapting to substantial changes. It also supports school staff in a variety of ways at different points during the school day.
Our Young Interpreters begin their training in year 5 so that they are fully ready for the role by the time they reach year 6. Throughout the school year they help in a variety of ways such as welcoming new arrivals to the school every week, hosting school assemblies, working with the School of Sanctuary team, presenting for school governors and community partners and assisting during parental workshops and events.
We have recognised that our Young Interpreters feel more empowered, proud of their home language, confident and have a greater sense of belonging in our school after completing the Young Interpreters training and events.
